  • Beaufort at NVT Numurkah (irrigated site) 2015

    January 29, 2018

A visit to the Numurkah NVT Irrigated wheat trial site (Oct 2015) caused some surprise when standing in front of the Beaufort Wheat plot (mid season, awnless, red grained, feed wheat).  The plot looked amazing – absolutely jammed with heads standing about 1.3m high but with no sign any lodging issues – noted among many of the other lines at the site.  Having topped the Numurkah Irrigated site in 2014, Beaufort was again at the top of the yields. As a reminder – Beaufort is VS for Stem rust, so growers who are looking at putting in Beaufort should be…

  • Mini bulk up plots at our main trial site – Inverleigh region

    January 29, 2018

During the evaluation phase of the GrainSearch Trial program, selected potential varieties are sown into multiple plot areas at the trial site (mini bulk ups). This allows GrainSearch to carefully check the potential new seed line for off-types whilst building seed stock for potential multiplication on farm to prepare for eventual commercial release and to have sufficient seed to qualify for NVT entry requirements (must have 500kg of seed of a line to enter it into NVT testing).

  • Manning as a graze & grain crop in Tasmania

    January 29, 2017

Manning is a Dual Purpose White Grained Feed Wheat. Each year in Tasmania, many growers rely on Manning to provide them with high quality grazing feed early in the year, followed by a reliable grain harvest. Sown usually in early to mid February, Manning grows quickly and is ready for grazing in 5-6 weeks and can be grazed right through to the depths of winter and beyond (to GS30 stage to minimise grain loss). Manning is then locked up and ready in about January/early Feb for harvest, producing good quality & high yielding white feed wheat grain.

  • New Quarantine Material

    January 29, 2017

GrainSearch continues annually to import new barley and wheat genetics from its breeding collaborators in New Zealand and Europe. Cereals enter the NSW DPI Quarantine Facility at Tamworth around March and a grown in pots for the season. We are then given the harvested grain from these pots in around March the following year (after lots of disease screening work). We receive amounts ranging from a few grams to 50 grams of seed per line. The first year in the field, these lines grow in small plots to provide us with sufficient seed to then expand into full replicated trialling…

  • GrainSearch’s new export malt type Barley variety Biere is showing its true colours

    September 11, 2016

GrainSearch’s new export malt type Barley variety Biere is showing its true colours this season in many trial sites across the country. [frame src=”https://www.grainsearch.net.au/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/BiereWestmereSept2016-e1473558674877.jpg” width=”240″ height=”320″ linkstyle=”normal”] Photo 1 shows Biere growing at the Southern Farming Systems (SFS) Westmere (Vic) site. Note the excellent ground cover Biere provides. It is very quick once out of the ground and with appropriate sowing rates, can quickly provide weed competition. Note the more open erect canopy that provides more opportunity for the weeds to sneak back in. Both were sown…
