  • Russian Wheat Aphid spreads into Victoria

    June 24, 2016

Confirmed reports show that Russian Wheat Aphid (RWA) has spread into parts of Victoria in early 2016. RWA affects cereals through their direct feeding on the plant. They also inject a toxin that causes the plant to wilt and striping symptoms on the leaves also appear soon after. Once the RWA is controlled, the plants can generally recover – unlike some of the virus’ spread by aphids (eg Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus). The RWA can be well controlled with a range of seed treatments and/or spray options. In Victoria, farmers may use sprays currently registered for other aphid control on…

  • GrainSearch’s potential Fast Malting Barley continues to show promise

    October 22, 2015

GrainSearch is continuing to evaluate the super quick 9516-01 Barley in 2015 and it is again showing strong potential to be the next commercial variety release for GrainSearch.  The line reaches 50% head emergence at least 10 days faster than Hindmarsh, making it an extremely quick barley.  Preliminary malting data shows that the line has strong export malt characteristics and in the field, agronomically it is fast out of the ground, shows good disease tolerances and copes in drier conditions. Along with GrainSearch’s own extensive evaluation trials,  9516-01 has been entered into all 2015 main season NVT barley sites in Vic,…

  • New Leaf Rust now widespread in Australia

    October 22, 2015

Tests conducted by the University of Sydney’s Australian Cereal Rust Survey this season has shown that the new Leaf Rust Pathotype  104-1,3,4,6,7,8,10,12+Lr37 – (an overseas leaf rust of unknown origin that was first detected last season in SE SA), is now fairly widespread in most cereal regions in Australia from SA, Vic, NSW, QLD and even Tas. Many wheat varieties will need to have their Leaf Rust Resistance rating upgraded due to the presence of this new pathotype.  SQP Revenue and Manning have shown some level of susceptibility. Reports from the field however, indicate that a sensible rust management program…
